Know What to Expect Before You Arrive
Whether this is your first certification class or a renewal, knowing what to expect can make the experience more comfortable. Review class preparation, participation, certification, and other student information before you arrive.
It’s Okay to Be New at This
Many people come to emergency response training feeling a little uncertain. You may be worried about remembering the steps, practicing in front of other people, asking a question, or getting something wrong the first time.
That is part of why the class exists.
You are not expected to arrive already confident performing the skills. For blended-learning courses, the online portion introduces important concepts before the instructor-led session. The classroom portion gives you an opportunity to apply that knowledge, practice the skills, receive coaching, and build confidence through hands-on work. You will have opportunities to see skills demonstrated, practice them, receive feedback, and try again when needed.
The goal is not to put anyone on the spot. It is to help you leave more prepared and more confident than when you arrived.
Learning Comes Before Performing
Emergency response skills become more comfortable through explanation, demonstration, practice, and repetition.
You Don’t Have to Know It Already
The course is designed to teach the material. Questions, unfamiliarity, and needing clarification are expected parts of learning.
Practice Is for Learning
Getting a sequence wrong, forgetting a step, or needing another attempt during practice is not unusual. Coaching and repetition are part of developing the skill.
You Won’t Be Put on Display
Hands-on activities may involve instructors or other participants, but the purpose is skill development—not making students perform for the room.
A Few Things to Check Before You Arrive
Confirm the Date, Time & Location
Review your registration confirmation for the exact class date, scheduled start time, and training location. Allow enough travel time to arrive before instruction begins.
Complete Any Required Online Work
Some courses may include an online learning component. If your registration includes online coursework or other pre-class requirements, complete them before attending the instructor-led session.
Submit Online Course Completion →Dress for Hands-On Practice
Training may include floor-level practice, CPR skills, equipment use, or other hands-on activities. Wear clothing and footwear that allow you to participate comfortably.
Bring Your Questions
If there is a concept or skill you are unsure about, ask. The class is an opportunity to work through those questions with an instructor rather than trying to figure everything out on your own.
Training Is Built Around Participation
Applied Response Training courses combine instruction with opportunities to practice the skills and decisions discussed during class.
Clear Instruction
Course concepts and skills are presented in a structured, approachable format with opportunities to ask questions along the way.
Demonstration & Coaching
Depending on the course, your instructor may demonstrate CPR, AED use, first aid techniques, bleeding control, or other emergency response skills before you practice them.
Hands-On Practice
Practice gives you an opportunity to work through the skills, receive feedback, make corrections, and become more comfortable applying what you have learned.
Know What You’re Working Toward Before Class
The credential awarded, certification period, and completion requirements depend on the course you select.
That information should be available when you review and register for an upcoming class so you understand what certification you are working toward before you arrive.
Certification is awarded after successful completion of the applicable course requirements. Depending on the course, requirements may include completion of assigned online learning, participation in the instructor-led session, demonstration of required skills, and any applicable knowledge or skills assessments.
Review the details for your selected class before attending so you know what credential the course provides, how long it is valid, and what is expected for successful completion.
